Mario Kart for the Nintendo Wii has to be the best Wii game released this year! It has everything that you could possibly imagine in the range of characters, ammunition against rivals and rampant racing tracks with clever secret shortcuts.

When starting out with Mario Kart, you can choose from 8 characters like the adorable Mario himself, Peach or the dastardly Waluigi. As you play further and complete races with trophies, you will be awarded with extra characters like the speedy Daisy and Dry Bowser (a skeletal pirate version of Bowser himself). These characters are faster and more powerful than the originals, so race like a madman!

The greatest part of this game is the fact that you can plug in your Wii remote into the Wii Wheel. The motion sensitivity of the Wii remote is great when plugged into the wheel, and you get more of a sense of actually driving rather than just pressing a few buttons on a dull stick remote! I have a lot of fun trying to bump and bash my opponents off the track and into either lava or the deep sea.

However, to help those of you are not as brutal as me, there are loads of cool objects that you can collect along the way to either use against your oponents or to speed yourself up. You collect the objects by driving in to the question mark boxes that you’ll find easily along each track.

If you collect the ‘Bullet Bill’, you will be transformed into a Bullet temporarily that will go through the course at high speed knocking down anything in its path.

If you collect ‘Banana Skins’ then you can drop them behind you or throw them in front of you to make the other drivers slip up! this is really fun to watch!

The worst (or best) object is the ‘Spiny Shell’ or otherwise known by us as the Blue Shell of death! This locks onto and chases after the lead vehicle, then blows up when it reaches its target. Any vehicle in the caught in the blast will be flipped over or spun around! There is no defence to it, but luckily they don’t come along too often.

I will let you in on a little secret. When you are at the starting line, press the acceleration button down when the number 2 starts to fade and you will be sure to get a kick start to the race.

And watch out for those shortcuts. The best way to find them is to drive through a track and explore. You never know what you might find! But for now, try this. At the end of Maple Treeway, drive up the ramp at the side of the tree (either the left or right tree) and get a speed boost over the ramp to the finish line.

Enjoy!

I am arguably the number 1 fan of Mario Kart Wii! As a casual gamer (with addictive characteristics), I never thought that I would get so much fun out of playing a driving game! As with my scepticism when we first bought our Nintendo Wii, I was extremely reluctant to buy my husbands gaming choice of Mario Kart for the Wii. I was so sure that I would not enjoy what I thought would be a boring driving game that would only appeal to boys. But however hard it is for me to admit again, Shaun proved to be right. I love it!

Mario Kart has it all! You can play up to four players, or more via the internet. You get to choose great Mario characters to play, along with many ‘pimped up’ karts and bikes. And the more points you score in different levels, the more karts, bikes, characters and tracks you unlock! For beginners you will start off in the 50cc range of vehicles, and will soon progress up to the 150cc range. You will also be graded on your driving ability. If you are good enough to get into the star class then more treats are unlocked like expert ghost data to battle against, and competitions to get you ‘fired up’.

Surprisingly, all this is just for starters! If you have Internet and other friends with Mario Kart, you can hook up online to play against each other. You can also play against other Mario Kart fans all over the world. Boost your ratings and rankings if you can win these races. I can get ‘lost in Mario Kart space’ for hours when I get online!

My favourite extra feature is the competition section. Here you can compete in crazy time trial and quest tasks against other online players. Nintendo are constantly setting new competitions so you will always be spoilt for choice! Just yesterday I was playing a new comp where I had to find 15 coins amongst the autumnal virtual scenery whilst trying to avoid the stampede of giant caterpillars! Lots of gaming fun for all ages!

Mario Kart is not for the faint hearted though as it can get very fast paced, hectic and dare I say a bit vicious out on the track! If you are anything like me, and you don’t like losing, you may find yourself shouting at your TV screen!

If you want to have some real gaming fun, this is a must have!

It seems that absolutely no one has escaped the gaming revolution of the Nintendo Wii. Whether you own one, are thinking of buying one, or know someone that has, this slick stylish slim line console is now a household staple Fit For Royalty, serious gamers and the average Joe. Nintendo Wii is everywhere; on TV, billboards, in the press. In January of this year it was reported in UK magazine The People that Kate Middleton got Prince William a Wii for Christmas. But he has to share it with his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II as she is showing signs of becoming a devoted gamer! Check it out:

http://tinyurl.com/royalwii

Well if it’s fit enough for royalty…What are you waiting for?

My husband Shaun first got me thinking about getting a Wii when we got back from our honeymoon in April this year. At first I was dead against it. I am a one for being outdoors as much as possible, even if it means braving the elements to get a bit of fresh air. I’m not the least bit sporty, but anything that involves a country walk (with a reward of a cafe stop at the end of it) or even a drive out to explore a lesser known area of the countryside or coast really appeals to me. So the thought of spending a heap of money on a gaming console that would have us ‘tied up’ for hours on end whilst being stuck indoors filled me dread. Shaun thought that I would really enjoy a Wii, especially as it is so interactive and doesn’t just have you sitting like a couch potato. But, I just wasn’t convinced.

I think deep down I had the preconceived idea that people that rate computer gaming as one of their hobbies, or even their only hobby, were just sad and needed to get a life and get out a bit more! So that was the end of the matter. We weren’t getting a Wii. Or so I thought.

Back in the summer we had a family gathering where one of our relatives brought along his Wii. The whole family agreed that the Wii Sports looked really fun, and eventually I was cajoled into having a go as my four year old niece could play the bowling and tennis games just fine. To my surprise (after dropping the bowling ball a few times and getting thrashed by my four year old niece) I actually really enjoyed the game. Nintendo Wii is truly innovative. I couldn’t believe just how good the motion sensitivity was, and how much fun could be had by all the family as you add more players. Watching your friends and family play is just as entertaining as playing yourself as some of the body actions required to play some of the games are truly hilarious!

It wasn’t too long after that family gathering that we bought our Wii. I have not regretted it!

Shaun and I are currently slightly addicted to Mario Kart Wii. It’s the most fun that I could ever imagine getting out of a racing game, and it’s definitely not just for boys!

If you, like me, list Nintendo Wii gaming as one of your hobbies, then let me know your thoughts on Wii gaming and any other consoles that you use. If you are a casual gamer, what is your favourite game? What are your most pressing questions about Nintendo Wii?

I rate Wii gaming as a good runner for the Hobby Holy Grail. But the question is, do you?
