This article just proves how powerful a tool the Wii Fit can be in fighting life threatening diseases.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to post, because my reasons for wanting to lose weight aren’t funny.

Two months ago, my mother died after fighting colon cancer for eight years. She’s the second person in our family to die of colon cancer, which can be hereditary.

As I was searching through her files afterward, I found an odd collage of pictures of my siblings and me mixed with magazine clippings, play money and hand-written notes from my mother. It was one of those spiritual self-help, “wish list” exercises. She wished for us to have loving spouses, beautiful homes, successful careers, etc. But the pictures of me were pasted on the bodies of thin fitness models. Underneath she wrote: “This is Sandie happy because she’s a healthy weight.”

Finding that photo was such a heartbreaking shock. I knew my mother always wanted me to lose weight, but seeing that posterboard was horrifying. I looked at myself in the mirror and realized she was right. I need to do something this coming year to get to my true age’s fitness level. I’m sick of looking 52 instead of 32.

So why do I need a Wii Fit? Because I need a way to work out at home (with three kids under 7 and a husband who’s rarely home before 8:30, gym membership isn’t feasible right now), so I can be healthy, not just for myself, but so I can ward off colon cancer and at the same time fulfill my mother’s wish.
I hope you find hours of fun and health for you and your family in this Wii and Wii Fit.

I was recently lucky enough to loan the Wii Game Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games. I wanted to try it out to review its gaming capabilities and to see if there if there were any health benefits to be had.

The reality is that there really is. Many of the games give you a good cardio workout if you play them in the right way. The most active games such as Aquatics and Track require you to ‘run’ or ’swim’ by shaking the Wii remote and Nun-chuck up and down alternately. This can have you shaking about like a crazy person. I was out of breath in no time!

When you try the Fencing games, make sure that you are standing so that you can actively take part in the game as you lunge to strike your opponent. Standing whilst playing the different Olympic events really does optimize the workout that you can get, and you will perform better in the games as your mind will be more alert and focused. I know that I am more likely to gain the gold medal if I stand up to play because I am actively participating rather than passively pressing buttons!

Use the more stationary games such as Skeet and Trampoline to give yourself a ‘breather’ between the more hectic games.

Here’s a line up of all of the 21 events that you can play in Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games:

100m Track

400m Track

4 x100 Relay

110m Hurdles

400m Hurdles

Long Jump

Triple Jump

High Jump

Pole Vault

Hammer Throw

Javelin Throw

100m Freestyle Aquatics

4×100m Freestyle Aquatics

Trampoline

Vault

Skeet (Shooting)

Archery

Fencing

Table Tennis

Rowing

Dream Events

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to all of the gaming action. Don’t forget that you can play with up to 4 players for those daredevil contests!

University lecturer gets £5,000 to study Wii

A university lecturer has been given £5,000 to study the health benefits of the Nintendo Wii. Michael Duncan will work with schoolchildren for six weeks to see if the popular games console can improve fitness and tackle obesity.

Half of the children in the study will play Wii games, such as tennis, golf and boxing, during their school lunch break. The remainder will take part in their normal lunch-hour activities. All pupils will be fitted with an accelerometer that measures energy use from jumps, side turns and other movements. Duncan, a senior lecturer in exercise physiology at the University of Derby, hopes his research will determine whether computer games can benefit children.

Mission Oak students use Wii for physical fitness BY Victor Garcia November 8, 2008

Mission Oak High School has a new item to add to its collection of physical education equipment – a Nintendo Wii.

The Nintendo Wii and the Wii Fit add-on are for special needs students at the high school.

Physical education teacher Dina Da Silva raised the money to purchase the Wii from a local business, family and friends.

Students also helped raise money. A parent donated the television it’s attached to, she said.

“We were approached at the beginning of the year about allowing students with special needs to enter our PE department,” Da Silva said. “I thought, what can we do to help these kids get exercise?”

Da Silva had the idea for the Wii and Wii Fit.

Some kids who cannot participate in regular PE can use the Wii Fit, she said.

Student Jayne Mattingly, 15, is one of the users of the Wii. She has spinal bifida and is in a wheelchair.

“It’s awesome. It’s fun,” she said. Before the Wii, Mattingly was participating in P.E. but was taken out because she was getting extremely tired, she said.

“It’s good exercise for me without being painful,” she said.

Her father, Phillip Mattingly, said he was impressed with the idea of a Wii at the school.

“I thought it was incredible,” he said. “It’s very advanced.”

Special-needs students play the Wii inside an area of the gym while other students are doing cardio exercises, Da Silva said.

The games they play range from Wii Tennis to Wii Bowling. Da Silva said she raised enough to buy a second Wii system and plans to do so once she raises enough funds for another TV, she said.
